JSC’s Vice President Masthoor resigns

Judicial Service Commission (JSC)’s Vice President Masthoor Husnee resigned from his post on Thursday.

Masthoor was appointed to JSC on December 12, 2018, as the member appointed by the president. JSC thanked Masthoor for his service following his resignation.

His resignation comes after the resignation of JSC’s member, lawyer Abdulla Maaniu last Sunday, who had been the member representing lawyers in the commission. Maaniu announced his resignation via a post on Facebook that did not disclose the reason behind his resignation.

However, he was appointed a High Court judge on Thursday.

Newly elected Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam was appointed to JSC on Wednesday.

He was appointed to the post following the resignation of former parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed from his post as the speaker.

Reforming the composition of JSC is an electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in order to exclude political figures from the commission. However, this was not accomplished during his five-year term garnering criticism from political opponents.

President elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu who will be sworn in this evening has also pledged to reform JSC, to ensure the commission’s independence from political influence.
