Ex-Deputy Minister Madhanee Abdulla sent back to Maldives after being held in Malaysia

Former Deputy Economic Minister Abdulla Mohamed (Madhanee Abdulla) was sent back to Maldives on Thursday after being briefly held by immigration in Malaysia.

Foreign Ministry told Sun that the High Commission of Maldives in Malaysia of Abdulla’s detainment by immigration upon arrival in Malaysia at approximately 9:40pm last night.

The Ministry said the High Commission had provided Abdulla with consular services after receiving the information.

“A consular staff working at the High Commission of Maldives in Malaysia had immediately gone to the airport upon receiving the information and provided Abdulla with all the consular services needed,” the Ministry said.

Foreign Ministry explained that Malaysia followed a rule of sending back inbound travelers who are barred from entering Malaysia on the next flight scheduled back to their respective country from the same airlines they had traveled.

However, the Ministry said Abdulla was booked a seat from another airline scheduled to travel to the Maldives from Malaysia today, with the assistance of the High Commission, as the next flight to Maldives from the airlines Abdulla initially traveled with was scheduled for Saturday.

“Have been informed that Abdulla Mohamed has now departed to the Maldives,” the Ministry said.

Foreign Ministry did not disclose why the Malaysian immigration detained Abdulla.

Abdulla has previously also served as the State Minister for Home Ministry.
