Male’ City’s deputy mayor Ahmed Nareesh has announced his candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

He announced his decision to contest the April elections in a post on X on Monday.

Nareesh said he plans on running for the North Kulhudhuffushi seat.

Nareesh told Sun that he made the decision at the request of multiple constituents from North Kulhudhuffushi.

“I made the decision to contest for the constituency at the request of many of its constituents,” he said.

Nareesh said he was committed to being a public servant who is steadfast in advocating for the rights of the constituents of North Kulhudhuffushi, working with the government for the development of the constituency, and ensure Kulhudhuffushi becomes a city in the truest sense of the word.

Nareesh, born to GA. Kolamaafushi, currently serves as the acting mayor of Male’ City, after the incumbent mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu won the presidential election on September 30.

The Elections Commission is preparing to hold the by-election for Male’ mayor on January 17.
