Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group, on Sunday afternoon, has approved the submission of a second no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

No-confidence motions against both the speaker and the deputy speaker of the parliament were initially submitted with the signatures of 54 MPs last June. However, MDP withdrew the motions after the first round of the presidential election.

Resubmission of the no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed was passed during a parliamentary group meeting held on Sunday afternoon, as confirmed to Sun by MDP’s parliamentary group leader, North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam.

Aslam said the parliamentary group approved the resubmission of a no-confidence motion against Nasheed with the unanimous consensus of all members in attendance at Sunday’s meeting.

Sun has learned that MDP is presently collecting signatures from MPs to resubmit the no-confidence motion against Nasheed. Signatures of 45 MPs are required to submit the motion to the parliament; 56 MPs in the parliament presently represent MDP.

MDP previously withdrew the no-confidence motions against Speaker Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla citing in the interest of the current circumstances.

MDP had sought to secure support from the Democrats for the runoff of the presidential runoff; efforts that were unsuccessful. The current main ruling party ended up losing the runoff as well.

The Democrats was formed from a breakaway faction from MDP, after internal conflicts between pro-government and anti-government members.
