The Democrats have called for an investigation into the corruption of the current administration after main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) initiated efforts to remove former President Mohamed Nasheed from his post as the parliament's speaker.

While efforts to collect signatures required to submit a no-confidence motion against Nasheed have begun, the discussions of the no-confidence motion has been slated on the agenda for MDP's parliamentary group meeting scheduled for tomorrow.

The Democrats responded to the government as the media outlets reported MDP's intention to re-submit a no-confidence motion last night.

The Democrats' interim Chairperson and West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef said MDP has always advocated for embezzlement and corruption to be investigated in a credible manner. He also said that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and MDP administration should be investigated for embezzlement and corruption.

"President Solih and the MDP government should be investigated for embezzlement and corruption. There has to be repercussions. The Democrats have always been against embezzlement and corruption,” Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb, who contested the presidential elections on behalf of the Democrats, said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Speaker of parliament and North Galolhu MP, Eva Abdulla, said the main reason Democrats members left MDP was over the increase in unchecked corruption within the government.

So, she has called for an investigation into the matter.

“It’s not wise to lash out because you can’t accept defeat. We, the Democrats, are quick to ask the appropriate agencies to investigate the corruption of the government that is running out,” Parliament’s minority leader and Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim said.

He also said that the Democrats would never approve of embezzlement and corruption, adding such crimes of the current administration should also be investigated.

North Maafannu MP Imthiyaaz Fahmy said MDP has turned into a network of embezzlement and has spent five years in corruption despite claiming that this government came to probe such matters. He cited investigation without discrimination as the only way to restore the peace in the nation.

Former MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaz also said, sharing an article talking about the no-confidence motion against Nasheed on X, that the government is trying to sacrifice many people in the hope of covering up the crimes committed by some influential people.

Nasheed did not comment on the matter, but posts made by Democratic leaders on X have been shared on his unofficial X account.
