EC: Will exercise equality towards both candidates in the election

Elections Commission (EC)’s chairperson Fuad Thaufeeq, reaffirming the commission will exercise equality towards the two candidates contesting the presidential election runoff, has stressed there are obstructions that would compromise the fairness and the independence of the runoff.

Briefing Sun on the latest preparations underway for the voting in the runoff slated for Saturday – Fuad said EC, however, has observed concerning things from candidates, particularly highlighting anti-campaigning from both candidates against each other.

He said apart from anti-campaigning, everything else had proceeded faultlessly.

Fuad, as EC’s final advice to the public, urged everyone to exercise their right to vote as early in the morning as possible.  

“It is most preferable that you go to vote at 8:00am. If not, please ensure you go to vote before noon,” he added.

Fuad stressed that voters will not be able to queue for voting after the polls close at 5:00pm.

An extension was not provided for the queuing deadline in the first round of voting. EC says they will adhere to this during the runoff as well. Polling stations will open at 8:00am and close at 5:00pm on Saturday.

“There will be table in the voting area to leave phones and handbags. But might have to take the risk of losing such items,” he further said.

Fuad also appealed for the cooperation of the public in ensuring a fair and independent election, and urged against causing disturbances.
