Former foreign minister Dunya Maumoon has rejoined the main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Dunya, the daughter of former Maldivian president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, signed for PPM in a campaign rally in Hulhumale’ on Monday evening.
She presented her membership form to the interim leader of the PPM-PNC coalition Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey), and the coalition’s presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Prior to rejoining PPM, she had served as deputy leader of the Maldives National Party (MNP), which signed a coalition deal with the PPM-PNC earlier this month.
Dunya had previously worked alongside her father in both Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and PPM. She had served as foreign minister during the PPM administration, but later resigned amid the internal power struggle within the party between Maumoon and then-president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom – her uncle.
She later rejoined PPM, and went on to serve as state minister for foreign affairs and deputy foreign minister.
She joined the MNP in August 2021.
