Government fishing company MIFCO has decided to increase the price that they buy fish to MVR 25, from today onwards.
It seems that they have decided to do this as it is confirmed that there will be no duty taken for goods exported to Europe and the UK.
So far MIFCO has been buying fish for MVR 17 per fish.
MIFCO said that they have come to this decision after listening to the concerns of the fishermen. They are also working to increase the capacity of fish they can buy.
At the beginning of this year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that he will stop the duty that is taken for goods exported to the UK and Europe.
President Solih and MDP leadership have also met with local fishermen last night. Fishermen expressed their happiness at the decision and shared other concerns with the president as well.
Some of the biggest concerns of the fishermen are the issues faced in getting enough ice, the capacity of the fish weighing places, and not getting a just price for the fish they bring. The candidates that contested this years presidential election also pledged to increase the price of the fish they buy.
