Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has made the decision to re-start paying 50 percent of the salary of its employees in US dollars.
MACL had originally begun to pay half of the salary of its employees in US dollars back when the national airport was run by GMR. However, the salary was changed to wholly Maldivian Rufiyaa in 2020, following the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic.
MACL’s spokesperson Shamman Shakir told Sun on Wednesday that the change will be effective starting this month.
“Half of the take home salary will be paid in US dollars. This change is applicable to all employees,” he said.
It is a welcome change for the company’s employees.
MACL, which runs the Velana International Airport (VIA), is one of the state-owned enterprises that generates the highest revenue.
The company has paid all its employees an annual bonus of MVR 25,000 the last two years.
