Adam Asif, a member of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s legal team, has joined main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Asif, after signing for the party, presented his membership form to MDP’s Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail on Thursday night.
The lawyer has played an integral role in the political activities of the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). He has also represented members of PPM arrested during protests in court.
Asif, who has served as a member of PPM’s Appeal Committee, was a face often seen on the frontlines of opposition’s protests and other activities calling to free their jailed leader, Yameen.
He is also among individuals who have highly criticized President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his administration.
