Two arrested in fire in Maafannu

Two men have been arrested in connection to a fire which broke out at a house in Maafannu district of Male’ on Wednesday.

The fire broke out at the Houseplaza in Maafannu at around 11:12 am on Wednesday.

According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the fire had burned litter in a place that served as a warehouse.

The fire did not result in any injuries, and was put out by firefighters at around 11:31 am.

A police spokesperson said that two Maldivian males were arrested in connection to the case.

The spokesperson declined to confirm whether they were being treated as suspects, saying that “it will only become clear after the investigation”.

The fire created a thick blanket of smoke, prompting the Health Protection Agency to issue an advisory, urging nearby residences to close their doors and windows, and take other protective measures.

The fire had been the second such incident to hit Male’ City on Wednesday.
