President Solih to retire from politics after second term

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that he will retire from the political field after the next presidential term.

Saying that he is very sure that he will be reelected for a second term on Raajje TV’s “Fashaairu” program today, President Solih also said that he will no longer be active in politics after the next term.

“I will retire from politics. I will a=do no more political work after this term,” President Solih said.

He said he intends to stay away from political activities but will do volunteer work for the people for a while.

The President said the coalition had 78,000 members when he launched the presidential campaign and is expected to surpass 90,000 before Saturday's elections.

“That means roughly, to win the election then we would need about 35000 more votes, in addition to party membership,” President Solih said.

President Saleh began his political career in 1994 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Faadhippolhu. Thereafter, he served five consecutive terms.

He was serving as MDP’s PG leader when he won the 2018 presidential ticket.

While President Solih announced that he would retire after a second term, all the former Presidents of Maldives, who are still alive today, are active in the political arena.

Some of them announced their retirement after they stepped down as president, but have resumed political activities due to something that happened later.
