Majority from AA. Humandhoo in the upcoming presidential elections has been guaranteed for main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) subsequent to the president of the island council, Husham Ismail, signing for the party.
Husham, who was elected to the council independently, signed to MDP on Thursday, coinciding with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
MDP previously held the supermajority of Himandhoo Council. However, they lost all three seats except the two seats allocated for women. The councilors who were elected to the three seats that MDP lost had contested independently.
Speaking at a campaign event held at Himandhoo after signing – President Solih, underscoring a great number of residents had newly joined MDP from the island, extended gratitude to them.
Apart from Husham, some members of Himandhoo Women’s Development Committee also joined MDP on Thursday.
“I welcome council President Husham, the WDC members and over 50 people who joined us today. What I am seeing today is the super majority being with MDP on September 9th. I am very grateful,” he said.
Speaking at the event, Husham said he signed for MDP because the president has been fulfilling the pledges he had previously made for the island, which included 16 projects.
