Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) states it has begun reinforcing security measures for independent presidential candidate Umar Naseer, in the wake of a death threat he received on social media over the weekend.

Umar, a former home minister known for his hardline stance on drugs, shared screenshots of the threatening comments made via an anonymous account on Monday.

The social media user asks Umar how many kilos of drugs he distributed to get votes, and claims that drugs are the biggest source of revenue to the state.

The user also threatens to kill Umar by stabbing him in the neck with a knife.

Umar alleged the threats were made by a “drug lord.”

A spokesperson from MNDF told Sun on Tuesday that Umar hasn’t officially reported the death threat to the service, but has shared screenshots of some of the threatening messages with MNDF officials in his security detail.

MNDF said that it is taking necessary measures in collaboration with relevant authorities.

The death threat had come after Umar was hit with a metal object thrown at him from the crowd during a road rally in Hulhumale’ two weeks back.

Umar alleged the assailant was a drug dealer.

He was unharmed in the incident.
