Maldives National Party (MNP)’s leader and presidential candidate Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim states that perpetrators of sexual violence and domestic violence will be denied clemency and commutation of sentence in an MNP administration.
Speaking at MNP’s women’s leadership forum on Wednesday, Nazim expressed concern over a continued culture of oppression of women in Maldives.
Stressing the need to end the slander and abuse of women, Nazim said it was high time for a permanent solution to rape, sexual violence and domestic violence against women.
“Believe me. I will be someone who realizes the dream of young girls and empower them to have an equal footing as men,” he said.
Nazim said that perpetrators of violence against women and children will receive severe punishments during his administration.
“In Sha Allah, I will make certain they are denied clemency, and never see the outside of a jail cell,” he said.
Mere lip service isn’t enough when it comes to protection of women’s rights, he said.
Nazim pledged to create room for women to fulfill their educational and career goals.
