President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is on a campaign tour of HA. Atoll, has explained a “formula” he mentioned earlier, which he said would double the Maldivian economy.
In a campaign rally in Hoarafushi on Wednesday, President Solih said that he planned on doubling the economy by achieving 3 million tourist visits by 2028.
He said the target would be achieved once projects to develop the Velana International Airport, the Gan International Airport, and the Hanimaadhoo International Airport are complete.
“Our target is to increase annual tourist arrivals to over three million by 2028. This is what I mean when I say the economy will double,” he said.
President Solih said a leader must have a long-term vision and plan.
“A person who seek only tomorrow cannot rule,” he said.
The president said that projects to develop five more airports will begin before the end of his current term.
Noting that it was his fifth visit to Hoarafushi, the president said the residents of the island were witness to the transformative changes the island has undergone under his leadership.
He said that the changes to Hoarafushi are transforming the entire Bodu Thiladhunmathi Atoll.
“I feel the people recognize this. This makes me happy,” he said.
President Solih pledged to build flats or rowhouses, and a hospital in Hoarafushi, if elected for a second term.
“What will your decision be on September 9? Move forward. Move forward, and In Sha Allah, nothing bad will happen,” he said.
President Solih is accompanied in his tour of HA. Atoll by Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali, as well as deputy leaders of the Maldives Development Alliance, Ali Mauroof and Dr. Aishath Rafiyya, and top officials from the Adhaalath Party.
The president will cover 10 islands in his two-day tour of the atoll.
