President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said vowed to take F. Atoll and M. Atoll – two atolls that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) failed to take a majority in the 2018 election – by a landslide in the upcoming presidential election.

Speaking to reporters during a campaign visit to V. Fulidhoo on Monday, the president said that unlike in the 2018 election, the MDP has seen a boost in popularity from the two atolls as he seeks a second term in office.

“One of the biggest changes I noticed is that, unlike in 2018, popularity has increased, especially in M. Atoll. M. Atoll and F. Atoll were two atolls we failed to color [yellow] back in 2018. But I see us securing landslide victories from both M. Atoll and F. Atoll this time around,” he said.

President Solih said that not much has changed in V. Atoll either, which MDP secured a majority in in 2018.

In 2018, MDP won 49.2 percent votes in M. Atoll, and 49.3 percent votes in F. Atoll. Then-president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had won both atolls.
