Elections Commission (EC) states the number of MPs may increase in the next parliamentary assembly, which will be elected next year.
EC’s vice chairman Ismail Habeeb tweeted on Sunday that as per Article 71 of the Constitution, the number of MPs must be set based on two MPs for every 5,000 registered residents of administrative districts, and one more for every additional 5,000 residents.
Habeeb said that in accordance with regulations, the commission will announce the number of MPs for the next parliamentary assembly before July 28.
“It is possible for a change in number of MPs in the 2014 parliamentary assembly,” he said.
