President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Thursday, remarked the whole of Guraidhoo constituency has become yellow, a deduction he says he made based on the scene he witnessed today at K. Gulhi.

Speaking to residents of K. Gulhi on Thursday during a campaign visit to Guraidhoo constituency – the president said the constituency was far from MDP previously; something which changed during the constituency’s parliamentary by-election held recently which saw the constituency’s support extended to MDP.

“Today, I feel that the people have accepted the things MDP administration has done for the constituency,” he added.

The president said when he assumed office basic services required by the citizens were scarcely available. On this note, he detailed citizens' persistent complaints regarding inadequate water and sewerage service, health services and education.

He further stated that establishing peace in the nation was just as crucial as basic services in order to develop the nation.

In this trajectory, President Solih said although opposition might rally to protests, no individual from within the government should partake in such activities.

“Opposition will express their opinion. Protest. But, people within the government having to rally for a protest is something that invokes thoughts,” he added.

President Solih, noting he faced obstructions in the course of his term, said they have been overcome at present.

Speaking further, President Solih said the main request of Gulhi residents had been to solve waste management issues on the island and space constraints by reclamation of land in addition to the development of a laboratory at the health centre and addressing space constraints faced at the harbor.

With reference to this, the president said his administration prioritized Gulhi as the island had been left mostly uncared for by previous administrations despite being located near Male’.

He pledged to fulfill these requests during his next term as follows;

  • Commencement of and reclamation at Gulhi during September by contracting to MTCC
  • Address space constraints faced in the harbor during next term
  • Develop a laboratory at the health centre
  • Launch ATM service

President Solih, on this campaign visit to Gulhu, was accompanied by coalition partner, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)’s leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed; MPs Hisaan Husain, Ali Niyaz and Abdulla Jabir.
