The government has decided to allocate land from Hulhumale’ to the Ahmadiyya International School to construct a new building.

Urbanco, which issues land to schools free of charge, allocated a plot of land from Hulhumale’ Phase I to the Education Ministry last week.

According to the school’s principal Mohamed Rasheed, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had promised to find a solution to the space constraints faced by the school at the 40th anniversary celebrations of the school.

"Ahmadiyya is not a private school. It is a people's school. It is a partially government-owned school. Therefore, the government has always provided assistance to Ahmadiyya in everything," he said.

He said an extension of the school will be opened in Hulhumale’ as soon as possible, once the land is officially handed over to the school.

"As a result, Ahmadiyya will eventually have more space. Students from Hulhumale’ are already arriving in huge numbers at Ahmadiyya. Children from Hulhumale’ would thereafter be able to attend the school there, instead of having to come to Male’,” he said.

Rasheed said that it will also free up space from the school in Male’, allowing more students to enroll at the school.

He added that even if the school receives the land, it cannot start building immediately.

“I have been informed the government plans on allocating a 44,000 square feet plot. Therefore, it is not possible to begin construction immediately," he said.

Rasheed said they intend to construct a temporary building on the land in time for the 2025 academic year.

"It is difficult to build a permanent building immediately. After the construction of a temporary building, the construction of a permanent building will proceed. Then we will consult with the relevant authorities and decide," he said.

Ahmadiyya is one of the most successful and quality educational institutions in Maldives. Scores of students from the school rank among the top 10 in A-levels and O-levels each year.
