Famous young artist Bathool Ahmed, her husband Meekail Mohamed, and 23 others have joined the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Bathool and Meekail presented their membership forms to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is in home island Lh. Hinnavaru for the Eid al-Adha holiday, on Saturday morning.
The president’s brother, Hulhumale’ MP Ali Niyaz, who is accompanying the president on his trip to Hinnavaru, told Sun that the MDP is “moving forward” and expects to see a considerable increase in membership numbers in the coming days.
He said that remarks by the opposition “will not derail the party’s activities.”
“Its clear. The youth, the middle-aged, and the elderly alike believe the MDP administration has done important work for the youth and other age groups,” he said.
Niyaz said the new members will work to promote the party among the youth.
MDP has been engaged in efforts to drive up membership ahead of the presidential election.
