Fayyaz: Nasheed’s resignation allows parties to ‘move forward’

(From L-R) Former President Mohamed Nasheed, MDP's Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Former president Mohamed Nasheed’s resignation from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) paves the way for all parties to move forward in their chosen paths, states Fayyaz Ismail, the country’s economic minister and chairperson of the main ruling party.

Nasheed left the party he founded earlier Wednesday, citing that he does not believe it best to remain with MDP at this time.

In a tweet in response to Nasheed’s announcement, Fayyaz said that he wished Nasheed “well and success” on behalf of himself and the MDP.

“Whilst this is a sad day, this also paves the way for all parties to move forward in their chosen paths,” he said.

He thanked Nasheed for his dedication to MDP and the success achieved under his leadership.

Nasheed’s resignation comes after over a dozen MPs loyal to him left MDP and applied to form a new party – The Democrats.
