Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed has been notified in connection to the no-confidence motion filed against him, signed by 54 members of the Parliament.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds a supermajority at the Parliament, filed the no-confidence motion against Nasheed.

In a letter sent on Monday, the Parliament’s secretary general Fathimath Niusha stated that a no-confidence against Nasheed was received on June 7.

According to the regulations of Parliament, within three working days of receiving the motion, a 14 day notice must be given. Hence, this letter is officially notifying him.

However, the motion has yet to be set in agenda. The letter read that he would be informed at a later time of when it would be scheduled.

In addition to Nasheed, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla has a no-confidence motion against her as well, after she departed MDP.

Though the 14-day notice sent to her expired on Sunday, the motion hadn’t been set in the agenda due to delays in key decisions by the Parliament’s General Purposes Committee.

According to the Parliament, decisions by the General Purposes Committee got delayed as committees have not been reappointed based on the changes to the Parliament’s composition after 13 MPs from MDP, including Eva, left the party last month.
