241 Committee, at next meeting, to seek letter to Mauritian prime minister

Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) parliamentary group leader, North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam, on Tuesday, said the details of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s letter to Mauritian prime minister regarding the border dispute between Maldives and Mauritius will be requested at the convening of the parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee).

Speaking at a press conference held by the parliamentary group on Tuesday afternoon, Aslam underscored that a number of important committee works remain pending as committee works, at the moment, have been suspended in order to constitute all committees again.

“A decision has not been made on the president’s letter (to Mauritian prime minister) because 241 Committee cannot convene. In the case I remain as the chair of the committee any further, I have the intention of seeking the president’s letter from the President’s Office through the 241 Committee,” he said.

Aslam said the constitution of the committees has been stalled over disagreements between political parties.

“I believe even today to have been a day the composition could have been approved. But this was not done. We believe each day which passes without doing this as a day the parliament’s works are stalled,” he said.

The main revelation during Tuesday’s press conference by MDP’s parliamentary group had been their decision to initiate efforts to file a no-confidence motion against Nasheed.

Aslam said the no-confidence motion will be submitted once the signatures from the majority of lawmakers are collected.
