Landhoo waste collection pickup torched

A pickup sent to N. Landhoo for the launch of waste collection services in the island has been torched.

A police spokesperson said the case was reported to the police at 04:22 am Tuesday.

Police have yet to make an arrest in the case.

Landhoo Council’s president Abdul Azeez Mohamed told Sun it is not yet clear whether the fire was deliberate.

However, locals allege the pickup was deliberately torched.

Abdul Azeez said the pickup was brought to Landhoo for the waste collection service, which is scheduled to launch Thursday.

“The pickup was purchased with the MVR 400,000 provided by the government and MVR 85,000 from the council,” he said.

He said that the registration of insurance hadn’t been complete, and it is therefore unclear if the council will be compensated for the loss.

Similar incidents have taken place in Landhoo in the past, including the torching of the island’s police station ahead of its opening, and the island’s health center.

According to the council, the cases were never officially confirmed as arson attacks.
