City Council: Sinamale’ flats to be demolished after building alternate housing

Male’ City Council states that the Sinamale’ flats, built with the assistance of the Chinese government during Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration, will be demolished after constructing alternate housing for families presently residing at the flats.

Male’ City Council, in its 103rd general meeting held on Wednesday, decided to seek investors to demolish and rebuilt Sinamale’ flats with the unanimous consensus of 12 councilors who attended the meeting.

In this regard, they decided to rebuild the flats at the location as a new project; ‘Sinamale’ Redevelopment Project’.

Commenting on the decision – Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that Sinamale’ flats will be demolished after constructing alternate housing for families presently residing at the flats.

“The families presently residing at Sinamale’ 1,2,3 and Male’ Hiyaa 1,2 will permanently be moved to a new building. The flats will be demolished after constructing the new building and handing over the keys to the tenants,” he said.

Mayor Muizzu detailed that 128 families reside at the five buildings planned to be demolished. He said the new building being constructed will accommodate all these families and will comprise of 15 or more floors. He said the new building’s apartment will be more spacious than the apartments where the families presently reside.

1,500 apartments will be built under the ‘Sinamale’ Redevelopment Project’ which will include two-bedroom apartments, three-bedroom apartments, and four-bedroom apartments. The size of the apartments will range from 800-1,300 square feet.

The Sinamale’ flats, built some 30 years ago, have 128 apartments.
