Gabbarey arrested after surrendering to police; remanded for 30 days

Ibrahim Abdulla (Gabbarey), 32, MA. Night Villa, whom the police have been seeking as a suspect in the attempted murder of Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer, has surrendered to the police.

Police made an announcement seeking public assistance to locate Gabbarey on May 15th.

Police, on Tuesday, confirmed Gabbarey’s arrest after he surrendered himself a week later. Criminal Court has remanded him in police custody for 30 days.

Gabbarey was in Male’ as police searched for him.

He is MDP’s South Machangoalhi constituency president.

Gabbarey admitted participating in the 2007 murder of Ali Ishar, H. Kunbura, using sharped edged weapons during the investigation process. At that time, he was 16. The state charged him with participation in an intentional murder using a sharp-edged weapon in connection to the case.

In 2010, Juvenile Court found him not guilty of the charge citing lack of evidence. The state appealed Juvenile Court’s judgment to High Court on April 17th, 2012.

Police, in their announcement seeking public assistance to locate Gabbrey, said they were seeking to find him in order to arrest him under a court order in connection to a case under investigation by the Serious and Organization Crimes regarding gang violence using sharp-edged weapons and attempted murder.

Sun has learned that Gabbarey is a suspect in the attack on MP Zareer earlier this month.

Zareer had been at the Habibi Café’ and Bistro in Galolhu district of Male’ City when he was attacked by a group of five men.

The incident took place at around 03:30 am May 1.

Zareer sustained head injuries in the attack and was hospitalized at the ADK Hospital briefly. 

Police said the suspects used a “dangerous weapon” in the attack.
