Nasheed’s allies seek name for new party

Politicians loyal to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s leader Mohamed Nasheed are seeking a name for his new political party.

After months of clashes within the main ruling party between members loyal to Nasheed and those loyal to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, scores of members from Nasheed’s ‘Fikuregge Dhirun’ faction left MDP last week, including 12 MPs.

The faction announced plans to form a new party on Wednesday.

Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, one of the 12 MPs who left MDP last week, said they were forced to leave the party.

She said that there were clear on the values they wish the new party to adopt.

“Multiple politicians want to horn the policies and the future of this country in the upcoming presidential election,” she said.

Eva said that MDP, along with other political parties operating in Maldives, have moved away from the pledges they made to the country’s youth.

She said they wished to listen to the opinion of the youth before they form the new party.

“We want to learn what they envision for this party,” she said.

“The first step is the name, logo and design. And then we want the involvement of people,” she said.

Proposals for a name, logo, and color for the new party is open online until 06:00 am Friday.
