Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali, on Monday, has stated that the new building for Arabiyya School currently under development at the old Jamaluddin School land plot will reach completion by the academic new year in 2024.

She stated so in response to a question posed by Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq at Monday’s parliamentary sitting regarding Arabiyya School.

Minister Aishath Ali, underscoring that the development of Arabiyya School was contracted to Amin Construction on a design and build basis last year, briefed the parliament on the progress of the project at this time.  On this note, she detailed that the concept drawing has been completed while work related to detailed drawings are presently underway.

“Physical works will commence at the old Jamaluddin School land plot sometime today. We are estimating completion by 2024’s academic new year if work proceeds according to the current schedule,” she added.

The new Arabiyya School building was contracted to Amin Construction on September 29th.  Amin Construction was awarded the MVR 168.5 million project to be completed within 420 days.

Parents of Arabiyya School students protested in December 2021 over the large cracks in the school building raising questions as to the structural integrity of the building and students’ safety.

As a result, Education Ministry announced their decision to temporarily transfer Arabiyya School students to Izzudheen School – a decision that the parents had opposed. Following this, the Ministry said they were seeking land from Male’ City to construct a new building to relocate Arabiyya School. President Solih decided to allocate the old Jamaluddin land plot to develop a new building for Arabiyya School on December 20.

Presently, Arabiyya School students study at the temporary building which Foreign Ministry had used previously.
