Shah also quits JP to back President Solih

Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC)’s Managing Director Hassan Shah has also resigned from Jumhoory Party (JP) on Thursday to back President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Shah, who is serving as MWSC’s managing director on a slot allocated for JP, in a letter to the party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim on Thursday said that President Solih’s term is an exemplary portrayal of national stability and development basis services.

Therewith, stating his decision to support President Solih in this year’s presidential elections in the letter, he requested his removal as a member of JP.

Deputy Minister at Higher Education Ministry Aminath Mohamed Saleem also decided to resign from JP on Thursday following her decision to back President Solih in the upcoming presidential elections. Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC)’s CEO, Managing Director Adam Azim also resigned from his post as an advisor to JP’s leader to rally behind President Solih on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Qasim has decided to contest this year’s presidential election on JP’s ticket. JP concluded to contest the election independently after President Solih extended an invitation to all political parties in the incumbent government coalition to take on the election together.

Subsequently, many government officials appointed to their posts on JP slots had tendered their resignation including Minister at the President’s Office Ahmed Sameer and Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Ahmed Hussain (Hanafy).

Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) leader, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who lost the party’s presidential primary to President Solih, has also been unofficially lobbying for Qasim to contest the election. In this regard, MDP members who belong to Nasheed’s faction, Fikuregge Dhirun, have initiated efforts to form a coalition with JP.
