Haroon Rasheed, Hiyaleege, GA. Villingili, has been dismissed from his post as the managing director of Agro National Corporation (AgroNat), a state-owned company incepted to develop the Maldivian agricultural sector.
AgroNat, a subsidiary of Maldives Fund Management Corporation, is fully owned by the government.
Haroon told Sun that he was dismissed from his post on Thursday.
Haroon, who contested the past two parliamentary elections on main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) ticket for GA. Villingili constituency, was appointed as AgroNat’s managing director in April 2020.
Haroon, who has previously served as the president of GA. Atoll Council, has also held the post of managing director at SHR.
Haroon was dismissed from his post as AgroNat’s managing director at a time President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has begun dismissing individuals holding political posts in the government that do not support him and his policies.
Haroon endorsed and campaigned for MDP’s leader, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed in the presidential primary of the party held in January. Nasheed, following his loss to President Solih in the primary, is engaging in negotiations with Jumhoory Party (JP) for a potential coalition for the upcoming presidential election alongside his allies under the ‘Fikuregge Dhirun’ movement.
MDP’s deputy leader Mohamed Shifaz, who plays an integral role in Nasheed’s faction, was dismissed from his post as a minister at the President’s Office on Wednesday. Meanwhile, another one of Nasheed’s allies, Hussain Amr Mohamed Rashad was dismissed as managing director of the State Trading Organization (STO) on Sunday.
