Maldives Correctional Service has revealed efforts were underway to vacate Male’ Prison before the commencement of the academic new year.
The decision to vacate Male’ Prison was prompted by the construction of the new Dharumavantha School building at the empty land plot next to the detention facility. Education Ministry is presently undertaking efforts to shift Dharumavantha School operations to the new building for the academic new year.
The academic new year is scheduled to commence on August 6th.
Correction’s Spokesperson Aminath Yusreen confirmed to Sun that efforts were underway to vacate Male’ Prison before the commencement of the academic new year.
“Efforts have been underway to vacate convicts and remandees in Male’ Prison to other detention facilities since last year. The goal is to complete the task before schools reopen,” she said.
Yusreen, in this regard, said that detainees in Male’ Prison are being shifted to Hulhumale’ Prison and Maafushi Prison based on the availability of space.
Previous attempts to change Male’ Prison to Thilafushi and Hulhumale’ have been unsuccessful.
