Nasheed: Shifaz has a bright future

MDP's leader Mohamed Nasheed (F-L) and deputy leader Mohamed Shifaz (F-R).

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s leader, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, on Wednesday, has remarked that the party’s deputy leader, Mohamed Shifaz, who was dismissed from his post as a minister at the President’s Office, has a bright future.

Nasheed, in a tweet following Shifaz’s dismissal, encouraged him not to be concerned.

“There is no other person who made more sacrifices to elect this government than Shifaz,” he added.

In his tweet, Nasheed also mentioned that his future was bright.

Shifaz’s dismissal comes amid the widening rift within MDP, with the party’s leader Nasheed’s allies engaging in negotiations with Jumhoory Party (JP) for a potential coalition for the upcoming presidential election. Shifaz is one of Nasheed’s closest allies, and has taken a lead role in Nasheed’s ‘Fikuregge Dhirun’ movement.

Shortly after Shifaz’s dismissal, MDP’s deputy chairperson Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey) was appointed as a new minister at the President’s Office.

Shifaz’s dismissal comes a few days after another one of Nasheed’s allies, Hussain Amr Mohamed Rashad was dismissed as managing director of the State Trading Organization (STO). Amr, too, was dismissed following allegations of openly moving against the government’s policies.
