Employees of JMC Projects (India) Limited contracted to develop 2,000 housing units by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation Limited (FDC) in Hulhumale’ Phase II protested in front of the Indian High Commission located in Hulhumale’ over unpaid wages and non-facilitation of meals on Wednesday.
A large number of workers gathered in front of the High Commission for the protest. Police officers at the scene worked to move the workers back.
Some of the workers told Sun that they are owed months’ worth wages. Moreover, they complained about the company’s lack of regard for health and safety and the non-facilitation of meals.
“We have not yet received our salaries. We get poor-quality meals. Supervisors eat at the table. We eat on the floor, on sand. There is no regard for any risks posed (to us),” the worker detailed their frustrations.
As per the worker, they have been denied meeting with senior supervisors upon request; another matter the protestors expressed enragement over.
The workers also protested on Tuesday evening at their work site in Hulhumale’ simultaneous to the time a senior JMC official visited the site.
An official from FDC, confirming the case has been brought to their attention, told Sun that they were working to solve the issue.
FDC had contracted the construction of 4,000 housing units to two Indian companies; NBCC India Limited and JMC. Each company will undertake the construction of 2000 housing units situated in 16 towers.
