Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) states they have made preparations to begin collecting waste from all households in the Maldivian capital.

Starting April, WAMCO will no longer collect a separate fee for household waste collection services. The fee will instead be tied with the monthly electricity bill – a change made to solve the millions owed to WAMCO in outstanding bills.

In an interview to SSTV regarding the preparations for Ramadan on Wednesday, WAMCO’s Household Manager Mohamed Shan said that the corporation makes special preparations for Ramadan.

Shan said that households produce more waste than usual in Ramadan. He said that WAMCO collects two to three times more waste than usual in the first three days of the Ramadan.

“As we will be collecting waste from all households and as this falls on Ramadan, we have prepared well,” he said.

WAMCO has asked households to put out waste between 08:00 pm and 09:00 pm. WAMCO workers will collect waste between 08:30 pm and 02:00 am during Ramadan.

“We will climb up the stairs to collect until April 1. That is, households registered with us,” he said.

Starting April 1, WAMCO workers will collect waste only from the ground floor.

“Our bill will tie with STELCO’s bill. We will provide our services to registered customers until April 1,” he said.
