Chief of Staff at the President’s Office, Ali Zahir, has confidently stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih can easily win this year’s presidential elections.
Ali Zahir made the remark in a tweet following Jumhoory Party (JP), included in the incumbent government coalition, decided to produce their own candidate for the elections.
His tweet read that winning this year’s election, under the helm of President Solih, would be easy by collaboratively working with the coalition formed with Adhaalath Party (AP) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
Sun was unable to get ahold of Ali Zahir for further comment.
Following JP’s decision regarding the presidential election, Ahmed Sameer, a JP council member who also serves as a minister at the President’s Office, resigned from his party.
Faisal Naseem, who serves as the vice president in the incumbent government, is a member of JP. He has yet to make a political decision regarding the elections.
JP’s council, during a convening on Tuesday, approved the recommendation made during the party’s congress to contest in the upcoming presidential election with the votes of 47 council members from 49.
JP, undertook significant campaigning efforts during the presidential elections of 2018, in order to ensure success for Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
