The council of Jumhoory Party, included in the incumbent government’s coalition, on Tuesday, has decided the party will produce its own candidate to compete in the upcoming presidential elections.

Speaking to Sun regarding the matter, JP’s Spokesperson Ali Solih said that the recommendation made during the congress to contest in the upcoming presidential election was approved by the votes of all council members with exception of two.

However, a tweet from the official account of JP’s Secretariate, read that the decision was approved by a unanimous vote of the council.

JP’s constitution dictates that a candidate to contest in the presidential election on the party’s ticket will be decided by a vote between those who file their candidacy.

JP’s council has decided to produce its own candidate for the presidential elections while main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has extended an invitation to form a coalition. Just recently, JP’s leader Qasim Ibrahim met with President Solih at the President’s Office.
