Resolution urges expedition of housing to Male’ residents

A resolution has been submitted to the Parliament urging the government to expedite providing housing to residents of the greater Male’ region.

The first reading of the resolution, submitted by Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim, was conducted during the parliamentary sitting Monday.

In his resolution, Azim said that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had failed to deliver his electoral pledge of providing housing to the residents of Male’ from the greater Male’ area as his five-year term draws to an end.

Azim said that President Solih had repeated his pledge of providing housing to Male’ residents during his annual address to the Parliament each year, since 2019.

He said that President Solih had yet to deliver on his pledge.

Azim said that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had promised to provide housing to the Maldivian people when it contested the 2018 presidential election. He said that President Solih, as MDP’s presidential candidate, had repeatedly pledged to provide housing throughout the campaign.

Though he failed to accomplish this, some of the MPs and Cabinet ministers went to homes in Male’ in conjunction with the presidential election and promised to provide land and flats, without any rules or regulations, as a form of manipulation to get votes, reads the resolution.

Azim called for greater transparency into the work of the committee in charge of evaluating applications for the ‘Binveriyaa’ and ‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ schemes under the government’s ‘Gedhoruverin’ housing program.

Azim said that numerous resolutions had been submitted to the Parliament over the issue.

I believe the government is acting extremely slow and directionless in addressing this, he said.
