WAMCO bill will be merged with electricity bill starting April

The bill for household waste collection services by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) will be incorporated into the State Electric Company (STELCO) electricity bill starting April, according to the Environment Ministry.

The decision was made to solve the issue of failure to make regular payments to WAMCO for its waste collection services.

Statistics show that out of 53,690 households in Male’ that receive waste collection services from WAMCO, only around 20,000 households make regular payments.

In a statement Thursday, Environment Ministry said cash flow constraints had left WAMCO unable to properly repair some of its equipment, leading to an increase in spending, and major challenges to regular waste collection and management services.

Following discussions between the Environment Ministry and WAMCO, it was decided that the solution lies in WAMCO receiving regular payments.

The move will not result in changes to WAMCO’s waste collection rates. And with the change, WAMCO will provide waste collection services to all households in the greater Male’ area, registered and unregistered.
