Case questioning legitimacy of President Solih’s presidency rejected

The constitutional case submitted to the Supreme Court questioning the legitimacy of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s presidency has been rejected.

Vice President Faisal Naseem had taken oath to temporarily assume presidency while President Solih had been under anesthesia for a thyroid surgery last year.

President Solih had resumed office after the three-hour surgery. President’s Office said at the time that it was done after informing the Parliament Speaker in writing, as required under Article 123 of the Constitution.

The main opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), submitted a constitutional case to the Supreme Court, arguing that President Solih had resumed office illegally.

However, the court rejected the case on Tuesday – marking the second time for the same case to be rejected by the court.
