The twitter handle from which a tweet was published calling for the bloodshed of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as a mean to overthrow his government has been suspended.
On February 2, Maldives Police Services began investigations following this tweet being flagged from the account ‘Nannaxeev’.
This tweet in question was made from the account of Male’ City Council’s Spokesperson Mariyam Shiuna.
Her tweet translates to calling for an upraising inorder to overthrow the current administration. She also accused this administration of cruelty towards muslims.
“This cannot be achieved by tweeting. Have to opt for bloodshed,” the tweet also read.
Shiuna’s tweet has now been deleted. In a tweet published later on, she explained that she deleted the earlier tweet as many people misunderstood its meaning. She said she had not meant a literal bloodshed by her tweet.
Encouraging terrorism is a criminal offense under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Previous cases of such tweets have been investigated, while some of them also saw charges.
