Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), on Sunday, stated that the party will be presenting its presidential ticket to its presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, next month.
A senior official from MDP said that the final results of the party’s primary held on Saturday will be announced within five days in accordance with the party’s constitution following which the presentation of the presidential ticket to President Solih will take place mid-February.
President Solih won MDP’s presidential primary held on Saturday with 24,572 votes. MDP’s leader, Parliament Speaker secured only 15,631 votes.
In a speech following his landslide victory, President Solih expressed contentment with the results, stating it was a notion of further guarantee that he could succeed in the presidential election. The president also reiterated his intention to move forward with MDP.
With Saturday’s primary, Nasheed’s long reign at MDP reaches an end. Nasheed has reigned over MDP since the party’s inception in 2003. This election would mark the first time another individual has faced off Nasheed and won an internal election.
The presidential election is scheduled for September 9, 2023.
