National Library developed to modern standards with BML’s assistance

Maldives National Library, on Wednesday night, reopened after refurbishment to modern standards which was carried out with assistance from Bank of Maldives (BML).

The library was reopened during a special ceremony on Wednesday night during which attendees were given a tour of the modern upgrades brought to the library with BML’s assistance.

Commenting on the upgrades to the National Library, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Yumna Maumoon underscored the need to acknowledge the positive changes which would significantly enhance the library experience for its users.

She stressed the need for human development in par with economic development when talking about sustainable national development. Minister Yumna said that human development can be achieved by building a generation capable of reading books and extracting information.

“We should make important decisions based on information obtained through comprehensive research. This generation is all about information. Finding information is the most basic use of libraries. The National Library plays a huge role in this. Children and youths can only be trained as readers and researchers if there are libraries. By increasing the quality of libraries,” she said.

Minister Yumna added that the National Library now consists of resources that should exist in a modern library.

BML’s Head of Marking Communication Ahmed Zareer who also spoke at the ceremony detailed that upgrades requested by the management of the library have now been made a reality by BML.

In this regard, BML revamped the entire library including the main reading area, Kiyavathi discussion room, silent reading and research room as well as the Makers Space and the National Collection room.  Existing facilities were upgraded with new computer systems, audio and video booth for digitization and for the first time, a security system was installed at the premise.
