Housing Development Corporation (HDC) states it received over 200 applications seeking land from suburban Hulhumale’ to relocate garages operated in Male’ City.

HDC is issuing 1,000 square feet plots from Hulhumale’ for existing garages in Male’ sized below 1,000 square feet, and 1,300 square feet plots for garages sized above 1,000 square feet.

HDC’s spokesperson Ali Mashar told Sun on Wednesday that the corporation is currently in the process of evaluating the applications.

“We are evaluating the applications as swiftly as possible. We expect to be able to begin issuing land around March,” he said.

The garages in Male’ are currently located in residential areas, posing a danger to public safety.

The decision to issue land from Hulhumale’ to relocate the garages in Male’ City had come after a fire in a car repair garage killed 10 people in the accommodation block located above the garage.

HDC said the move will help prevent such tragedies in the future.
