Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi, on Friday night, has described the most concerning issue at present as the probability of Parliament Speaker, Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed forming a coalition with opposition leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom to come to power.

Speaking at a campaign event of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at Artificial Beach area on Friday night, Mariya pointed out Nasheed’s recent remarks of similarity in political ideology between himself and Yameen.

On this note, Mariya referred to Nasheed’s remark that he and Yameen’s policies were the same apart from the ‘India Out’ campaign.

“Our beloved leader Nasheed coming out at saying Yameen is a visionary leader hurts our hearts. From our experience, we have to ensure he does not do such a thing,” she said.

Mariya also noted having witnessed members of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) lining up to welcome Nasheed during his visit to atolls.  She added that PPM activists were also involved in placing Nasheed’s banners and posters.

“He is talking about a coalition. My concern is that Nasheed might form a coalition with President Yameen to come to power,” she expressed.

Speaking further, Mariya recalled having to advocate for Nasheed’s independence from the conclusion of last MDP administration till the current administration took office.

She also recalled heinous events during Yameen’s administration including the violence inflicted upon journalists and peaceful protestors, which she stressed must not be forgotten.

Mariya also said that the imprisonment of opposition leaders and violence against judges during Yameen’s administration should also not be forgotten.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Nasheed said that he does not view Yameen so vastly politically indifferent – adding the only difference in ideology they have as the ‘India Out’ campaign headed by Yameen.

He also said that he would not back President Solih if he loses the primary and will also not back PPM.
