Local NGO Wellness Matters has expanded its ‘Plant a Tree’ project to islands across Maldives, as it celebrates three months since the launch of the project.
Wellness Matters launched its 'Plant a Tree' project on October 16, 2022, on occasion of World Food Day.
The project is now being run in 17 islands, with the involvement of 33 private citizens, nine institutions, and 18 schools.
The schools involved are running the project with the involvement of the environment club, Girl Guides, Cub Scouts, and Scouts.
The trees planted by students from Sh. Milandhoo School, Th. Veymandoo School, and HDh. Atoll Education Center have already begun bearing fruits and vegetables, states the NGO.
Wellness Matters is also conducting sessions to educate and train participants of the project.
The NGO has also partnered with the Education Ministry to start special classes aimed at educating school students on the nutritional value of agricultural produce.
Some of the participants of the project harvested the reap from the trees they planted within 45 days, according to the NGO.
Wellness Matters was founded by Zulfa Naseer, who wanted to share her experience in a wellness program she took by WellnessExpert Malaysia with her friends and family.
The NGO runs its ‘Plant a Tree’ project with support from Gender Ministry, Environment Ministry, Local Government Authority, local councils, and local schools.
