Fire at Fiyoaree School brought under control, old building burnt to ground

The fire which broke out at the old building of GDh. Fiyoaree School on Sunday evening has been brought under control.

Mohamed Iqbal who heading the school at present told Sun on Sunday night that although the fire had been extinguished, it had already spread to the whole building resulting in a complete burndown. The new building had not been impacted by the fire, he said.

Fiyoaree Fenaka Station Manager Hamdhoon Abdulla told Sun that the fire resulted in the building’s roof and walls crumbling down to the ground. He also noted that smoke continues to emit from the site despite the fire having been brought under control.

Hamdhoon identified the possible origin of the fire as an electricity board. He added that firemen from GDh. Thinadhoo Fire Station had arrived at the scene as of present.

Education Ministry said that the fire broke out at the old hall building of Fiyoaree School at approximately 5:00pm this evening. They assured that no student was hurt in the fire as it occurred during closed hours.

The Ministry detailed that the building where the fire broke out comprises of five classrooms – of which three are in use.

They further assured to be working alongside the school to make arrangements to ensure the studies of the students are uninterrupted.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said that firemen from Thinadhoo Fire Station and soldiers from southern area command arrived at Fiyoaree at approximately 6:54pm. They detailed that the fire broke out at a building currently being used at a hall that also comprises of five classrooms made out of partitions. MNDF’s Spokesperson said that the classrooms had been burned beyond use.

The Spokesperson said that part of the roof and the wall of the building had collapsed in a manner, enclosing the space. However, the fire had been controlled by the time officials arrived.

Nevertheless, the Spokesperson said that smoke continues to emit from the site. The Spokesperson further stated that although the cause of the fire had not been identified – they had been informed by the school that the fire originated at an electricity distribution board.
