President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has applied to run in MDP’s primary election with the support of 20,000 members.
In a tweet today by Kinbidhoo MP and the President’s campaign manager, Mohamed Nashiz revealed that Solih has turned in the candidacy form for MDP’s primary election with 20,000 approval forms.
“President Solih has turned in the form to run in the primary election to find the MDP candidate for the presidential election, with the support of over 20,000 members,” he said.
The people closest to the President began the work of getting signatures as soon as it was announced that the primary election will be held on January 28, 2023.
The party opened for applications to run in the primary election last Sunday. While the deadline is 4:00 pm today, aside from Solih the other person to apply is the Speaker of Parliament and President of the political party, Mohamed Nasheed. He applied with the approved forms of 500 members.
The primary elections were announced at a time when the party is facing internal division and differences of opinion. The difference of opinion between Solih and Nasheed stems from the type of government that should be constituted in the Maldives. And so this caused division between members that support them.
Due to this, this primary election looks like it will be filled with emotions and excitement.
The other primary election that was held by the party that garnered such excitement was the election of 2008. In that election, Rico Moosa Manik, a founding member and Dr Mohamed Munavvaru ran for candidacy. And the third person to run, and ultimately won the election, was Mohamed Nasheed.
