“Funeral announcements should officially be done by the island’s council. The regulation states so as well. We are undertaking this work, to carry out the task in compliance with the respective regulation. From now on, Male’ City Council will be announcing the funeral details of those passing away in Male’ City,” she said.

Till today, funeral announcements those passing away in the Maldives were made on ‘Kashunamaadhu’, a social media page run by a private party. Owner of the page, Ahmed Munawar, earlier reported being asked by Male’ City Council to stop running the page, which has been in place for over 15 years.

Munawar who works as a mosque staff at Male’ City Council said that he was asked by City Council’s Secretary General Mujthaba Jaleel to stop running the page.

Speaking to Sun on Monday, Munawar detailed that Mujthaba had asked him to immediately cease operations of the page citing an employee of the Council cannot undertake a responsibility of the Council in an individual capacity.

Male’ City Council denies making such a demand to any of its staff, on behalf of Mujthaba.
