Nasheed submits candidacy for MDP presidential primary

Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) leader, Parliament Speaker has submitted his candidacy application for the party’s presidential primary for next year’s election.

Nasheed announced his intention to run in the primary on Sunday. The submission of candidacy application was announced by MDP’s former Chairperson, West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef on Thursday night.

Since announcing his intention to run in the primary on Sunday – Nasheed commenced efforts to acquire signatures of supporters of his candidacy in Male’ area and in atolls on Tuesday.

MDP’s primary is scheduled for January 28th.

As per MDP’s announcement, individuals who are interested in contesting in the presidential election on MDP’s ticket can put forth their candidacy for the primary till December 24th.

Interested individuals have been instructed to submit their applications with the support of 500 members from the party before 4:00pm on December 24th.

While the party has announced its primary – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed his interest in running for a second term, also confirming his decision to compete in MDP’s primary.

The primary comes at a time MDP is divided into two factions – in a major internal conflict. One faction rally behind Nasheed, while the other, President Solih.
